RESERVE UNIT

What is a Reserve Officer? Reserve Officers are sworn officers that have essentially the same powers of arrest and authority as a full-time officer, with one exception, a Reserve Officer volunteers and receives absolutely no payment from Seneca Police Department. Reserve Officers are required to have equivelant training to that of a full-time officer. Reserve Officers who are experienced and exceed the expectations of the Chief are allowed to work alone as long as they are within proximate contact with an assigned full-time officer. Reserve Officers are a major asset to our agency. These officers supplement the full-time staff and work on their own time, for no pay, to protect and serve the citizens of Seneca.

In less than three years since the Reserve Unit has been established at Seneca PD, more than 4,000 hours of service have been given to the department at no cost to the city, with the exception of equipment provided to the current 4-man unit. With the addition of 2 more Reserve Officers in 2011 (6 total), the minimum cost savings to Seneca will be over $32,000 per year. It's expected that most Reserve Officers will contribute more than their minimum monthly requirements and this will result in well over $50,000 per year in savings.

Seneca Police Department has classifications within the Reserve Unit;
  • Reserve Sergeant (R/SGT): Advanced Reserve Officer who supervises the Reserve Unit and reports to the Uniform Patrol Lieutenant assiged as the Reserve Unit Coordinator. R/SGT assist in new RO selection, hiring, training, and functioning as a liasion between the Reserve Unit and Command Staff.
  • Reserve First Class (RFC): Advanced Reserve Officer who has successfully completed the Reserve Officer Training Program (or previously Class 1 LEO), as well as completed 280 hours of Field Training (FTO), and met the 600+ hours of training mandated by policy. These officers are allowed to work alone acting with full law enforcement authority.
  • Reserve Officer (RO): Reserve Officer who has successfully completed the Reserve Officer Training Program; however, these officers cannot function as a primary law enforcement officer. These officers are primarily in training and must ride-along with an officer until the FTO period is completed and they are released to work alone.
Reserve Officers donate their time and risk their lives to do the same job as paid full-time officers perform. Our Reserve Officer staff are issued equipment just as full-time officers, with a few exceptions.
  • Jeremy Rothell - Lieutenant, Uniform Patrol Unit
  • Stephen Baxley - Sergeant, Reserve Unit
If you are intersted in the Reserve Officer program, please apply in person at the Seneca Police Department after completing an application. Reserve hiring is based on the same process as a full-time officer. Please click here to visit the CAREERS page to download the SPD application.
